The Xinghai Concert Hall is located at the Ersha Island by the Pearl River and was completed in 1998. With an enormous investment of 250 million RMB, the building has become a new cultural landmark in the city for its unique biparabolic surface in a triangle shape. Thanks to the remarkably heart-warming sound effect, it has joined the ranks of the country’s top concert halls and won passionate applause from numerous musicians from home and abroad. In order to polish this “pearl” in celebration of her 15th anniversary, we took upon ourselves a “Mission Impossible” – to refurbish the public area to present a brand new outlook in order to accentuate its historical glory within 40 days with a modest budget of 3 million RMB. The key words of the design concept are “simplicity” and “Artecture”, which means integrating art and architecture.

Firstly, to make it simple, the only change we decide to make is on the parts that affect the overall visual effect of the lobby most, i.e., floor and handrail. The status before refurbishment was that the floors had been repaved more than once in the past 15 years and had two different colors in stone and styles in pavement; besides the handrails along the stairs and on the second floor were also made in various ways. However, it is not enough to embody the grand artistic temperament of a concert hall merely through achieving harmony via simplicity; instead, it must be succinct but not simple, like poems. Therefore we had the second concept “Artecture”, i.e., integrate music with architecture and use architecture to express music.

The racing current of the Pearl River is just like the flowing music, which triggered the inspiration of our design language. A long pitch arc of 86m was applied to unify the railing which had been divided into a dozen pieces in various colors by columns. The railing is made of logs with each level demarcated based on stave principle and the bedding plane designed in the shape of chord plate. The whole set of this wooden structure was made in factory and assembled on site in the lobby; the miracle of completion within 35 days was thus delivered! The soft-colored cherry wood constitutes a dancing sculpture while its cozy texture just echoed the most popular timbre in concert halls. The ups and downs of the curved railing is like both flowing music and running water, sometimes gentle and quiet while sometimes rushing and sonorous. Music is echoed in space while art is integrated with architecture.

If this artistic corridor with sculptural feel is compared to the mountain that couldn’t be ignored, the pavement design may be likened to water that moistens everything silently. We believe that a successful renovation project is more than just to rebuild something, but should respect the existing and inherit the tradition in order to realize true harmony. In the past 15 years, for the local people, the most impressive thing about the Xinghai Concert Hall is her triangular shape like a grand piano. While curve is applied in the pavement design of the lobby and again, it’s the running river that gives us inspiration. Ripples from three different centers crossed each other like sound waves and form a web, each mesh of which is made of three curved lines and similar to triangle. In contrast with the original square-shaped pavement, such design definitely demands higher standard of technique, for each junction is crossed by six curved lines and must be processed by computerized cutting. The floor thus looks like the riverbank paved with impactite and the visual effect of illusory enlargement produced by the “ripple” pattern makes the lobby look more spacious and accommodating. Through the combination of triangle and curve, riverbank and wave, the pavement associates the site with architecture and cultural characteristics. In this way, the mixture of old and new becomes a most unnoticeable while essential consonance in the renovation project.

We also designed a guidance system and sign boards to fit the space redevelopment. The inspiration comes from the origin of music – cavity resonator. All the characters are made of stainless steel tubes and the color happens to match that of the most precious instruments in the concert hall – the Czech pipe organ. Three-dimensional suspensory characters are cut into cuneiform and look like pan-pipes or pipe organ from side view. To distinguish from the aluminum sign board in common public places and match the cozy texture of the concert hall, the board is made of stainless steel with matt finish and inlaid in wooden plate; such concise collocation just echoes the new wooden sculptural corridor.

Architecture in tangible forms reflects intangible concepts. Simplicity enables us to create something new while conserving the old. Therefore renovation can really make a difference while in the meantime maintain the harmony. We think that the concept “Artecture”, integrating art and architecture, means architecture is more than function and art can be more than ornament.
